Dating ‘Flowers at Sea’
Hou Hsiao-hsien’s classic work, ‘The Flowers at Sea’, was released in 1998. The premiere of the restored version took the event to a climax. The film is the latest Chinese film repaired by Jaeger-LeCoultre in the past year.
As one of the three masterpieces of the famous director Hou Xiaoxian in the 1990s, the movie ‘Flowers at Sea’ is based on Han Bangqing’s novel ‘Flowers at Sea’ created in 1892. Its Mandarin version was translated by Zhang Ailing, a famous writer. The story told in the film took place in Shanghai in the 1880s. In its rich and exquisite emotional atmosphere, the intense dialogue, the thick ink design and the amber-like tone and light and shadow were all captured by the photographer Li Pingbin’s lens. It is a classic that Director Hou Xiaoxian contributed to the film world.
Reproducing the original aesthetically pleasing visual effects is a huge challenge. To this end, director Hou Xiaoxian and photographer Li Pingbin have personally participated in the restoration project and set up a multilingual and cross-cultural team of experts to improve the subtitles so that Better capture the dialogue of the characters in the play, and the implication behind the dialogue.
